Why are you starting a new chapter in your life and career?
Covid has changed both my industry and me as a person. For 48 years, I lived on a plane, traveling the world. Covid made me sit for nearly 3 years. I found that my home in Bangkok gives me peace. I want to focus on my local market as there are plenty of opportunities at my doorstep. Also, with businesses going online, working worldwide is at my fingertips.
When did you begin your career?
My career started in 1976 in Manila, Philippines, where I discovered that the local, indigenous handicrafts were a treasure chest of unlimited creative opportunities. My first designs were sold to stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel's, and designer Halston. From there, I moved to Hong Kong and built a successful business working in China. I can say I have sold almost every major department store worldwide throughout my career in over 30 countries, as well as international 5-star hotels and prestigious specialty stores.
What is your design style?
My personal design style is minimal and clean. Black and white are my signature, but warm neutrals for my home are my preference. However, the strength of my designs over my career has been my sense of color. Color is a very powerful tool that plays a huge part in my designing.
What is your fantasy creative project?
I have three fantasy projects: The first is being able to work with a 5-star hotel group and do all the artwork and amenities. The second is to work with high-end artisanal manufacturers, to create products for their worldwide distribution. The third is having a client with exquisite taste and carte blanche to design a state-of-the-art decor.
